Hey i forgot my HDD/SDD - i put it on b/c of a rootkit i got...but all the madness going on related to that time..caused much stress. Needless to say..I forgot it. I thought it was old address - the hint says that city name but nothing working. Havent turned laptop on in 11 months and still on here.

Can i Reset the HDD/SDD pw via same method on desktop ie CMOS? If not is there any way or must i throw it out

"It's not illegal to remove the password if he owns the machine."

It isn't , but most brand name system makers will only provide the info about how to remove the passwords if you're the original owner, and the rules of this web site forbid us from revealing illegal ways to remove passwords.

"We don't know whether or not the system is stolen so assuming it doesn't help anyone."

Legitimate former owners will usually remove passwords before they sell a computer. If the seller doesn't know what the system access or hard drive access password, then it's a lot more likely the computer was stolen, by the seller or by someone else the seller got it from, especially when it's a laptop or a netbook. If the seller claims they don't know or forgot their own password, or the person they got it from claims the same, you don't forget a password you have to use every time your use the computer, unless you have serious mental problems.

[yep i was that one...so stressed due to Rootkit that NO Computer tech 'expert' could find so i was always changing things up ie passwords etc..to make it stop. I always ended up more confused -forgetting passwords..It was crazy. I eventually discovered a White Paper on Rootkits..which explained how difficult they are to discover even for most seasoned techs.

You didn't state the model number, but here's a couple warnings from a Toshiba Satellite manual:

"CAUTION: It's not possible to defeat or remove a hard drive password. If the hard drive password is lost, the hard drive will be completely inaccessible, even if it is installed in a different computer."

"If you forget your HDD User Password, TOSHIBA will NOT be able to assist you, and your HDD will be rendered COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY INOPERABLE. TOSHIBA will NOT be held responsible for any loss of data, any loss of use or access to your HDD, or for any other losses to you or any other person or organization resulting from the loss of access to your HDD. If you can not accept these conditions, do not register the HDD User Password."
