Specs: Windows XP, 4gb Dual Core RAM
A few months ago our computer virus protection (AVIRA) stopped being able to access the internet to update itself. Now Windows MSN is having the same problem as well as a few other programs. I have disabled the Windows Firewall, and have put all these programs in the allow list with AVIRA, i have also removed all 'shadow running' processes that could have had firewall components. How can i fix this?

Sounds like you have a virus or conflicker worm.

Disabling the firewall only makes it worse.

thanks, but how do i remove it then? because my virus protector can't update itself, so in any scan it does, it finds nothing. Are there any free programs that specialise in getting rid of conflicker worms?

Might try another computer to get to the MS site. They have a few tools like the conflicker worm tool and security essentials. Might have to see if they offer a network install option so the whole file can be downloaded.

Use other computer to download other av software or even live cd's to try to repair the system.

Never easy to tell what is the matter either. Could be a hijacked host file.
