Finding Compatible HD?

Specs: Windows Vista, 4GB
My HD seems to be corrupt, and I have tried wiping it and re-installing both Windows XP or Ubuntu 10.4, but each have failed due to an input/output error. It seems I therefore have a hardware problem, and so am considering buying a new HD. However, how do I know what HD is compatible with my computer? I know its an IDE drive, and the computer model is Sony Vaio VGN A217M, so can anyone tell me where I can find a good HD? Thanks

It will take any standard PATA/IDE drive but from past
experience I think your biggest problem will be the actual
installation. The last Sony that I glibly said 'no problem' to was a
definite no-no as the drive wasn't a simple modular 'couple of
screws replacement' job, it was a real strip down of the whole
laptop. I ended passing it onto a laptop specialist who charged
the customer an arm & a leg for the service.

I can do the installation - I just took the old HD to see what the problem was. It is really complicated though. Whats up with that Sony? Anyway, any 2.5 inch IDE drive works? Is there a difference between IDE ASA100 and ASA133? Do you also know of any good site for buying HD, where I can narrow down the selection. Im looking for a cheap, 80-160GB drive basically. As fast as possible, but its an old computer, so dont think the speed of the HD will make much dif - the computer speed will prob slow it down anyway.

Is there a difference between IDE ASA100 and ASA133?

In practical terms none at all. 100/133 refers the maximum transfer speed but this is the burst speed, something that hardly ever happens in the real world. It is more a marketing gimmick than anything else.

In reality you will find little difference between ATA100 and ATA133.
