few questions about sound problems

May 2, 2009 at 06:36:32
Specs: Windows XP

1. My sister has a Dell Inspiron 9400 series laptop, and she has a sigmatel driver... When she tries to record sound directly from the soundcard (using the 'what u hear' function in various audio recording softwares) it doesn't record any sound at all. Now I've heard that this problem occurs because of the driver, and someone even recommended me to try and download Sigmatel drivers from another vendor, like LG and others... Now I'm pretty afraid that this might screw up her laptop, so I'd like to hear your advice - Should I try it, or maybe there's another solution to this problem?
2. Well, I know it ain't the best place for this question, but - My sister listens to many stream in the internet, but lately, when she listen to .rm streams, it sounds choppy and there are skips... Now that's pretty weird, cause it started only a few weeks ago, and she listens to .rm stream for many many years. I have the latest realplayer installation.
3. This question is connected to the 2nd question - When she listens to the .rm streams, it opens it usually in a internet explorer window in which you have the real player, and when she tries to open in directly in the real player by selecting 'play in real player', it opens her Windows Media player CLASSIC. Do any of you guys have any idea why this happens? It's very weird, especially because I told RealPlayer to associate all the formats, and told WMPclassic to not associate any files at all. Also - I've got WMP11, so why the hell does he open the Windows media player classic?

Me and my sister will really appreciate your help...
Thanks in advance, and have a nice day!

only use the correct driver Dell driver for inspiron 9400/E1705 here,

can it record at the same time play? , you need to find out is it full duplex audio device.

que3, rm stream trys to open in media player classic

it could be this prog has been associated with all audio

to change this open control panel , click folder options, tab filetypes

find .rm , highlight, then click 'change' this will open the dialogue box you can then choose realplayer , and tick the 'always use this program to open this kind of file.'

there may be an easier way if realplayer has in its options to reassociate rm files within its settings , im not overly familier with realplayer as it used to be a nuisance in its early days & i never wet back to it. prefer winamp but that wont play rm

some one else who is may point you in that direction.

Hi, thanks for the quick response
Apparently I've already got that exact driver version...
And I can record and listen at the same time, I just do a nasty trick for that - I connect a cable between the headphones jack and the microphone jack. So there's no problem there...
Got any other suggestions maybe?
Que3 - I'll try that, sounds promising!
