Fellen External HD wont show up in Device Mgr

August 23, 2010 at 13:33:15
Specs: Windows 7
It happened to me a couple of days ago. I tried to plug in my external hdd and it wouldn't show up. The hdd is a western digital. I tried all my USB ports and I tried 2-3 USB connections and non worked. When I connect it I see the driver get installed but it takes about 2-3 min. to install and it still won't show up on device manager or on My Computer. I opened the case and connected the hdd as a slave to my motherboard but when I went into the BIOS to Auto-Detect it, nothing i came across this (refer to video):

It fell off my dresser which is 2 1/2 feet tall. I just hope that the arm inside didn't break or something. If anybody has any experience with something like this please let me know. I have a lot of info to recover from this hdd.

Thank You

What heading are you looking for it in Device manager? There are two components that make up an external USB hard drive. The enclosure itself, which is a USB device that shows under Universal Serial Bus Controller. The hard drive itself shows under Disk Drives.

Look to see if either or both are showing up in Device Manager. You could also look for the drive under Storage> Disk Management.

I had checked the disk management when i connected the drive directly to the motherboard and nothing showed up. I read somewhere that i should uninstall the root hub under universal serial bus controller but nothing happened..thats just uninstalling the driver.

if its damaged internally then there is no possible way to retrieve the data, correct?

If it is damaged internally you may be able to recover data by sending the drive to a data recovery company. They open the drive and either change the electronics or install the platters in another drive. The process is expensive.

I don't know who told you to remove some USB hardware. I suggest you re-install all the USB devices. Either by installing motherboard drivers or possibly just rebooting may be sufficient.

Then check Disk Management again.

Expand the window to full screen when in Disk Management.

Oh, Well once I uninstalled it...it reinstalled automatically so I didn't have to do that...and I don't have the money to send it out like that lol. *sigh* im thinking of just banging it up a little and see if everything falls into place...joke..

but in all serious-ness....i MIGHT try to replace the board it has on the hdd..
that will be my last resort now..

thanx for your help tho.
