On an older PC, you would run Fdisk from a boot floppy to set up the partition on the hard drive; after that, you would run the Format command to format the drive. If you are reloading a Win XP PC, all you should have to do is reboot with the XP CD in the CD/DVD drive (with the CD/DVD drive set up in the BIOS as the First Boot Device) and follow the prompts to reinstall Windows.

FDISK is for FAT drives. If you want to use NTFS you will have to use something else.

If you want to use fdisk to format a FAT drive, download a win98 bootable floppy from http://www.bootdisk.com/
