fdisk/format issue

Hewlett-packard / N3410

Specs: win 2000 sp4, AMD k6/256
I have an old hp n3410 that came with ME and to try and keep up with the Jones'es I upgraded to 2000. Since the upgrade I have been having hardware issues and as of late the blue screen of death has been a constant. So out of pure aggrivation I decided to put ME back on. I am now having nothing but trouble and I have no idea why. I started out by doing the fdisk/format thing to put it back to fat32 and all went well until I put the ME disk (that came with the computer) in the drive. It start reading the disk shows the disk size, allocation units and other misc. info and then I get a invalid function-x:\tools\main.bat. I have no idea what that means. If I get past that error I get output A:\ghost.err? yes no What does that mean? I have never had so many different error message and misc things pop up. Im at a loss and not sure what else to try. I have done the reinstall of OS many times but this one has got me stumped. Please help if you can. Thank you.

What kind of install are you trying to perform? Possibly an image restore?

Did you delete the HP recovery partition?

Im trying to put it back to factory specs; trying to use the factory disks. I do have an OEM win 98, win 98SE, and the ME disks.

So, did the computer originally come with a restore partition or just a ME CD? were there other programs included that you want to also restore?

It came with 2 system recovery disks. As far as other programs I already did the fdisk and format so I assume everything was wiped out. I just want to do a clean install on a nice clean hard drive.

It sounds like you're using a restore disk and if it came with the PC then you shouldn't have any problems.

You ran fdisk and removed the existing partition, repartitioned it, rebooted and reformatted it? If so, and you're still having problems it's probably either a problem with the cdrom, restore disks, RAM or the hard drive.

Im trying to use the restore disk that came with the computer; when I put it in it tells me that my partition is not active. I went back to make sure it was active and it said that it was. Since my last post I put win 98 on it no problem and then upgraged it win 98SE and no problem. I then proceded to attempt the ME disk and it starts out ok I aggree to the restore factory settings it starts loading then aroud 3% it stops and I get an error. At this point I think I might stick with 98SE.

Sounds like the restore disk may be damaged. You might be better off with 98 but if you really want ME you can always get a regular ME installation disk.
