Solved Fan is the only thing coming on, on this pc we bought.

February 13, 2012 at 08:06:55
Specs: Windows 7
Only PC fan is working, nothing else will come on. I looked on the inside of the case, and it does not look dirty, and everything is hooked up. When we first bought it, you had to hit F1 to get it to recognize the hard drive. Then it wouldn't come on sometimes, then it just died, except for the fan. Any ideas?

You can crack the case open and list all components by make and model number and any other specs that he told you and we can determine possibly if it is worth a lot of work on your part of if it would be better to scrap the entire thing and start over. If enough components are high quality, relatively modern, and in good shape (no burnt looking components on the motherboard, etc), then it may be worth the trouble and possibly expense but if old, cheep, worn, or slow components, it may be best not to bother.

Would you walk into an auto repair shop & say "my car won't start, what's wrong with it?" & expect them to be able to answer without knowing the make/model/year/engine etc? Same goes for computers. Please list the specs. And there are numerous cooling fans in a PC (power supply, CPU, graphics, chipset, case cooling, etc), which one are you referring to?

It's possible the power supply is partially defective & only putting out enough power to spin a fan but not boot the system. We need more info.

I take it this is a used computer? Did you buy it from an individual or a shop?

Ok, sorry! My pc is a used Dell Dimension C521, 2006 model. It was bought from an individual that said he built it, but I can never get hold of him.

Dell builds Dell computers. You may have a Dell case with different hardware inside.

Did the computer ever boot directly into Windows?

How long have you owned it? Did the seller imply a warranty? How much did you pay?

Yes, the computer used to work, with windows 7. You always had to hit F1 before it would boot. It worked fine, I added updates, and then it decided not to run the monitor, keyboard or mouse anymore. We didn't pay much for it, it came with a nice monitor, and keyboard, so if we have to buy a different tower, it's not going to be a problem, I just thought we'd try to fix this one first. A friend of our said it sounded like the hard dirve. We only used this computer for about a week. I thought it was a little slower than our other pc, so I started using the other one, since this one started to shut off by itself. The next time I tried to use it, it wouldn't do anything, except for a fan I hear running. No clicking noises, nothing.

Your friend is likely wrong.

Did the seller provide you with any CDs or DVDs that go with the computer?

No, no Cds or anything. The CD drive is not working anyway, now!
