Thanks but in the end I used my set of acer recovery discs to restore the laptop. That cured the problem for now

OK, explain exactly what is occurring. Does the adapter appear in the list when viewing Device Manager? If so, is there a punctuation marks next to it?

The link below has a link within it to download a device identifier. Use it to verify you are loading the correct drivers.

First: thank you for your help.

Second: What occur sis that the Acer cannot find my network. When I point it to the network using the Win7 Network Sharing center, it establishes a connection which perists for a while but inevitably drops. No other device has this problem. I moved the Acer a few feet from the Cisco Wifi box as a test. No improvement.

Third: Does the adapter appear in the list when viewing Device Manager? If so, is there a punctuation marks next to it? Yes it appears on the list along with the MSFT virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. If by "punctuation mark: you mean "!", then yes next to the SFT virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. I reloaded the original driver from the Acer driver disk. It changed nothing. I will try your link

In Device Manager you said there is an ! next to the listing for your wireless. What color is the !?

If the wireless works but sometimes drops then it may be a range issue or interference between the devices.
