Solved External USB drive partially recognized.

Specs: Windows 7
External usb drive recognized as an installed usb device. Picks up device model number, etc.

Neither computer recognizes it as a lettered drive.

This happens with both XP and Win 7.

The drive worked fine until I installed Picasa [now uninstalled].

The first thing to check here is that the cable is connected properly. If the cable's loose, or damaged in any way, you'd probably be best off getting a replacement.

If it's not the cable, and it's happening on multiple computers, the only thing left appears to be the device itself. As you're using it for important data, I suggest going out and buying a brand new USB stick - you shouldn't need anything huge, but even if you did they're extremely inexpensive today.

What I've learned that it is likely a hard drive failure (1.5TB Fantom Green Drive...3 months old).

It worked fine until I installed Picasa and is spent a couple days indexing 50K of pictures that I stored on the drive). Now when I turn it on, it clicks 11 times and stops. The Win7-based system recognizes that a USB device has been connected, but is unable to read the data.

My strategy at this point is to turn it on occasionally and hope that it gets recognized. If that happens, I'll immediately copy all the files to another drive.
