External HDD problem

Specs: win xp, 1.8/ 2Gb
Hi everybody, I have a 250Gb external HDD just use to store important datas so I don't use it so much but now I try to plug it to every computer no one can detect it. If I go to Computer management I can see the drive but if double click it then I see the message want me to format the drive. What can I do? if I formate the drive I will lost all my datas and if not I also can't see my datas or use the drive, please help I don't want to lost my datas.

If this is actually a backup drive then you shouldn't be at risk of losing anything but your backup files. That said, you can try using testdisk to rebuild the partition. Get testdisk at the link below.

Be sure to read all instructions before attempting to use testdisk.

Hi OtheHill, thank you very much for your reply. I've tried it work but it can only recovery about 60% of my datas and the rest I can't see them.

Are you saying you ran testdisk? If so, then try using recuva. Get it at the link below.

Thank you verymuch for your help OtheHill. your answer is realy professional because I got my datas but if you don't mind to look at my other question at general forums of Windows XP the title is computer logoff automaticaly when I enter the password. I've posted for few days but no one can help, I hope you can.
