External HDD disappearing from My Computer

Specs: Windows 7, 2.66 GHz / 4069 MB
Hi guys,

I have an extra hdd plugged into my pc (Windows 7) via USB3.0.

The PC runs 24/7 and saves CCTV footage onto internal and the one external HDD.

The external drive will randomly "disappear" from My Computer. When I look further into it the drive appears as unknown usb device. I then have to unplug the hdd from the power point, wait a couple of minutes and plug it back in.

Normally the pc picks the hdd up again; sometimes you have to do it a few times.

My questions is why and how do I fix this? Thanks :D

Could be a bad cable. Or it could be the USB3 driver having problems "if you have USB3 on your motherboard", or it could be the external drives controller board, or it could be a bad external power supply. You will have to work through these items first.

After checking the obvious cable connections, I would install Seatools and run an Extended self-test on the drive. It will take a while depending on size and USB speed. But you want to make sure up-front that the drive is reliable.
