External hard drive wiping clean

Specs: Windows Vista
Have a Western digital USB external hard drive that has wiped clean 3 times now with the last time being last night. After the 1st time I thought maybe I'd done something wrong but after the 2nd time I obviously suspected something was wrong and swapped USB slots.
It is less than 6 months old and has only ever sat on top of my PC plugged in and used as backup for important PC stuff so I have the orginal data, however this is the 3rd occasion when I've attempted to access it that it tells me that the hard drive is not formatted and shows no data present on it.
Is it the hard drive itself or something on my PC???
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hy.when you cleaned on the laptop what exactly have you made ? If you formated it it is most probably used a different file system as the one your pc i guess.(ntfs,fat,fat32) Try to plug in to the laptop where you used it look into administrative tools\computer management.

Thanks for the reply. It is used with a PC, not a laptop. It was formatted with NTFS the same as the PC hard drive.
Not sure what you mean by this message - "when you cleaned on the laptop what exactly have you made"
Read another post with a similar problem where they mention they forgot to switch off the external drive, should it not be plugged it permantly as it is with me?
