Do not format that drive. You HAve to have another HDD in the system to copy files to.
Download and run this. If it is confusing, ask as you go.

Search removable drives.
You want all files if it is an option.
If it doesn't see the drive, might have to try an application to read the files and create the directory.

You can probably save yourself a lot of time and aggravation. Recuva will most likely allow you to recover your files. However, that is going to be time consuming.

You can probably repair the damage to the partitions by using a utility called test disk. Get testdisk at the link below. Be sure to read all the tutorials BEFORE using, for best results.

Testdisk will not destroy any of the files on the drive so if you are not successful in fixing the partitions you can always use recuva at that time.

BTW, you should always maintain at least two copies of any data you wish to keep.

If you don't have too many photos then it wouldn't hurt to copy them using recuva before running testdisk.

I am now wondering why your partitioning failed. If the hard drive is failing then it may be best to recover first and then repair. Get the stuff you can't replace first and then try repairing. You probably just pooched the partitions but you can't be sure.

Are you working on a mac?
