I have a 500gb SimpleTech external hard drive that is about four years old. It recently started making a high pitch, constant beeping sound, as well as occasionally locks up my PC forcing me to reboot when I would try to just browse folders in Explorer. I moved the hard drive from my desktop and connected it to my laptop, but the drive does not appear in My Computer.

The drive does show up in Device Manager as working properly. In Disk Management I believe it is also showing, as there is an “Unknown Disk 2 – Not Initialized” which I assume is it (my internal, second external, and cd-rom all show, so I don’t know what else Disk 2 could possibly be).

Is there anything I can try to do to be able to access this drive, without losing the data off of it? I’m running Vista Home SP2.

It may be possible to run a program that is meant to recover data from crashed drives but ask someone else which program works the best data recovery is not an area i am all that familiar with.

If the drive was/is making noises it sounds as though the bearings in the drive are/have gone out.

If the drive is spinning at all disconnect it before it completely stops.

Is your computer a desktop or laptop?

Thanks for the responses. The data I have on the drive is just too valuable to take any unnecessary risks with, so I’ve decided to take it in to a local PC pro and have him attempt to recover the data for me.
