Why would you try to format it if you have files on it? That would send your files into oblivion. Put the drive (don't laugh) in the freezer for a few hours.

I was able to reformat my hard drive I went it to a lot of crazy stuff in my computer just few Hrs ago then suddenly my laptop cant read the device anymore so when i tried connecting it back and checked it in device manager the hard drive was there but everything in it got deleted... well... i cant bring them back anymore so no hard feelings here... hehehe my fault, I partitioned it into 3 and put just 1 movie in (d) drive all others are empty, its starting to act weird again... i'm getting the same error **not responding** and my laptop would froze and so i need to unplugged it. I tried deleting the movie and put few pictures in (E) drive and same thing....Why is this happening? does that mean my hard drive is already faulty? Its just 6 mos old.. what does putting it in the fridge do? wouldnt it ruin things inside? pls help... I know just basic stuff in computer...

Did you use the recovery partition to do the reinstall? If not, did you have the install CD? Are all the drivers there? An external drive can go bad at any time. Actually, that goes for any drive. That's why people should backup in more than one place but time & time again, I see posts asking how do I save my data? Formatting is last resort & it doesn't save data.
