External drives and drive letters

Specs: Windows XP SP3, Pentium 4 CPU 3.06 /1GB Ram
I read the locked forum topic from 2006 about drive letter changes. I read the articles listed on one of the replies, such as Microsoft's KB.
The problem is that after using computer management to set the drive letter names, somehow some of them have changed. I thought that having set the changes, nothing would be changed from that.

For ex., I have one external drive for my photos, and I use Canon's utilities CameraWindow and ZoomBrowser to upload and work with my photos. But now some of the photos are in one place, and some in another, because the drive letters have changed.

Please advise how to assign the drive letters for external drives so that only I can change them. I am the only user of the computer and use an admin account.

Microsoft OS tries to use information about the drive to then later assign it a letter. It should in theory work correctly each time.

I'd suggest you install each of your drives all at the same time if you can. Then assign them higher letters such as M, N, P and such. See if it fixes the issue.

If you're constantly plugging & unplugging external devices, I don't think you can permanently assign drive letters to them.

Microsoft had a fix for this problem. While searching for it I came across the link below. See if it works for you.

There is no problem really. It is that they keep plugging in stuff and the OS tries to set the lowest drive letter.

Set them once to a high letter and it works all the time.
