External 75 Gig USB Drive letter issue

Microsoft Windows server 2003

Specs: Windows XP
Hello All, I have a 75 Gig USB external drive which I have attached to our win 2k3 server since I have to pull data off from time to time. Everytime I reconnect the drive I have to go to disk management and assign a drive letter. The drive is recognized in disk mgmt; just not given a drive letter. Is there a way without writing a logon script to have it so that when I plug the external in it automatically gets a drive letter or the drive letter that it was assigned before. I have tried different usb ports on the server and get same results. When I was running windows 2000 I did not have this issue. So the hardware is the same we just upgraded to 2003.
