Solved Evoluent Keyboard is Typing Very Slowly. What happened?

July 6, 2015 at 13:31:35
Specs: Windows 7, Intel 3.4 (?)/ 6gB
I know this is not exactly a computer-related question, but I don't know where else to go for help. Earlier this afternoon I tried to use the tilde key (~), but found it to be very stiff. After pressing it numerous times, it finally printed. The problem now, though, is that EVERY key now takes at least twice as long to print. Also, there is an annoying ticking sound with every key I press and the moment the key appears on the screen.

This only started a couple of hours ago. Can someone please help? It's driving me batty! Thanks!

Carolyn

Carolyn,

How is what you are experiencing different from having Filter Keys turned on?

What is the make and model number of your computer?

Have you tried restarting the computer?

If keys actually feel stiff then the keyboard itself is the culprit but the way forward depends on whether this is a laptop or whether it is a PC with an external keyboard.

If it's a laptop then try an external keyboard and let us know whether this is the same.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I have a Gateway GT5422E. It has an AMD Athlon dual-core processor, 2.6 Ghz, 2.00Gb RAM, Windows 7. The keyboard is made by Evoluent.

Yes, I rebooted the PC; didn't help.

Most of the keys feel the same, but I have to hold them for 2 "ticks" before they show up.

I'm still having trouble to understand that any keys actually feels very stiff, which can only be a mechanical fault. They would feel just the same if the computer was off. For the time being I'm assuming that perhaps they only "seem" stiff because of the delay.

I still think trying another keyboard would be worthwhile but let's have a stab at riider's suggestion (#2).

These three widely used and safe little freebies often unearth and fix a lot (run them in the order given):

AdwCleaner:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Cleaning" button.

Junkware Removal Tool (JRT)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run JRT. It might appear to have stopped at times or flash the screen but sit tight until it has finished.

MalwareBytes:
http://filehippo.com/download_malwa...
(green Download button top right - not anything else on the page)
Install and Run the program but before doing its Scan go to "Settings > Detection and Protection" and put a checkmark in "Scan for rootkits". Quarantine anything it finds.

If any of them find anything please copy/paste the logs on here and let us know if there is any change to the key delay situation.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Is it possible that Carolyn accidentally turned on an "Ease of Access"
feature? Those help people who have difficulty pressing keys because
they can't control the motions of their hands (or feet or mouth stick or
whatever they use) very well. One way to adjust the key response is
to slow it way down. The tilde key seems a likely choice for turning
such a feature on and off. You can look in the Control Panel under
"Ease of Access Center" for the many different adjustments, some of
which are turned on by default.

While I wait for the Malware Bytes scan to finish, I'll answer questions. Jeff, I already had the Mouse Keys, the Sticky Keys and the Filter Keys turned on, although the Mouse Keys only work half as well as before. Derek, there is no change in the key delay. I also ran a (nearly) complete scan of my anti-virus program, with nothing found.

Malware is finally through with no threats detected. Next?

ADW and JRT found plenty but I note that JRT was not capable of removing everything. You would need other programs to ensure the system is properly cleaned of malware.

Has any of this helped your keyboard trouble? If not does this only happen on line and do the keys feel free when the computer is switched off?

Also check out suggestion #5,

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Did you reboot after the scans completed?

Download & install CCleaner-Slim. Run the Cleaner & the Registry scanner...remove all they find. Then reboot.

I ran CCleaner, removed everything it turned up and rebooted the PC. The keys are the same, on or off, not stiff. But I am still having delays. As for #5, I already answered that. I'm getting frustrated.

Jeff, I know I said I had Filter Keys turned on, but I don't think I checked the settings. Guess what? I think the problem is solved. The annoying ticking sound has stopped and the delay in keystroke action appears to be gone. Thank you for forcing me to check that.

Derek and Riider, thanks to both of you for all your guidance. At least I know my PC is clean! :-)
