emachine netbook battery not charged past 90%

October 31, 2011 at 15:38:23
Specs: Windows XP
hello i've had this eMachine netbook em250 for over a year and it has been fine untill a few weeks ago, now it will only charge up to 90 % and it just keeps the charging light on,

i have brought a new battery and that does exactly the same

i have tested the power supply and that is giving out 20 volts like it should,

i downloaded a program called hwmonitor which tells you what all the sensors are reading and on that it says that the battery is 90 % charged and that the full charge capicity is 20326 mWh and that at 90 % the current charge level is 18706mWh which sounds about right,

i have tried cycling the batterys, letting them discharge and recharge a good 10 times now and it hasn't worked,

anyone got anyother ideas??

It's NORMAL for you to not be able to charge it to 100% capacity after it's more than a year old - 90% is pretty good.

Laptop main batteries usually work as they should for a year or so, then they begin to rapidly deteriorate. From what I've seen, by two years they cannot be charged to anywhere near their full capacity, and it gets worse after that.
They often develop internal shorts when they are older. If the battery gets HOT rather than just warm after you have attempted to charge it for at least a half hour, or after you have been using the laptop for a while with the AC adapter plugged in, it's definitely internally shorted and you must replace it. Internally shorted batteries getting too hot have been known to cause the laptop to catch on fire.

When you buy a new battery, you should follow the procedure to "calibrate" it - then you WILL get 100% capacity for a year or so when you charge it, if there's nothing wrong with your charging circuitry, or your connection of the AC adapter to the laptop. .

You're also supposed to "calibrate" it every so often. The result you get after it has been calibrated it is as good as it's going to get, if there's nothing else wrong.

There certainly CAN be something wrong with your charging circuitry, or, a LOT more likely, with your connection of the AC adapter to the laptop.......... .

sorry probably didn't explain myself very well, i have already brought a new battery and that does exactly the same as the old battery, i have ruled out charger as i have tried on my house charger and my car charger and net book runs fine on both but neither charge past 90 percent, tried my mates charger and that is exactly the same,

i was wondering is there a charging circuit inside the netbook which could have been damaged somehow,

thanks for the reply

If both are achieving 90% there's probably nothing wrong with your charging circuits . Read ALL the info I provided and the ALL info at the links.

I have nothing further to add.

If something in all that doesn't help, you could always buy a better laptop or netbook brand.

ok just for those ppl who have one of these laptops and have the charging problem, the emachines em-250 is the same as the acer d250, go on the acer website and download the latest bios update for the a0d250, the acer version has had a bios update due to the battery charging issues

Do you have the emachines em-250 ?

If you don't, then how do you know flashing ther bios with the Acer d250"s bios update fixes the problem ?

Acer, Emachines, and Gateway are all companies of the Acer Group of companies, but the initial bios versions used are NOT necessarily the same for each brand even when the comuputer is identical.
Flashing the bios with a bios update meant for another brand can result in the computer NOT BOOTING AT ALL after you have flashed the bios !
