RE: "Even when using SP2, it failed."

- What is the history of this DVD/RW drive?
- How old is it?
- Did it work before in your system?

There are two older firmware updates for this device:
http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php...

Otherwise, make sure the laser lens is clean by using a laser lens cleaner.

If the unit worked before, and now doesn't, and now even after using many different burning tools as you say, it still doesn't burn, I would assume that the device is failing. Replacing a DVD/RW is fairly inexpensive too.

MOOOOooove! OH and you're welcome!

Apparently Lite-On SOHW-1673S is an IDE drive that was first released in 2005.

Check your data cable to the drive.

It is common to un-intentionally damage IDE data cables, especially while removing them - the 80 wire ones are more likely to be damaged. What usually happens is the cable is ripped at either edge and the wires there are either damaged or severed, often right at a connector or under it's cable clamp there, where it's hard to see - if a wire is severed but it's ends are touching, the connection is intermittent, rather than being reliable.
Another common thing is for the data cable to be separated from the connector contacts a bit after you have removed a cable - there should be no gap between the data cable and the connector - if there is press the cable against the connector to eliminate the gap.
80 wire data cables are also easily damaged at either edge if the cable is sharply creased at a fold in the cable.

Try another data cable if in doubt.
....

My brother had a DVD drive that would black screen and reboot the computer shorly after he tried to burn a DVD.

It turned out his power supply was faulty - it couldn't handle the small extra load while burning.

Try connecting a different power supply to the computer - that's how I found out what the problem was.

Or - try connecting this DVD drive to another computer, and burning with it. In the case of that DVD drive it worked fine with another computer.

A post I found said that problem can be caused by something being wrong with the data you're trying to burn itself.
Are you trying to burn the same thing over and over again ?
If so, try burning something else.
