DVD reads only in safe mode

Specs: Windows XP
I have assembled a new computer with a new Foxconn motherboard with a fresh install of XP pro with updates. Purchased a new LG DVD RW and it will not read DVD's but works fine with CD's. It will read DVD's in safe mode. I replaced the DVD with a new Asus DVD RW and still no luck. I reloaded motherboard and DVD drivers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. No conflicts are seen in the device manager either. Weird that it will read both DVD's and CD's in safe mode but only CD's in regular mode.

No, a cable did not come with the DVD. I used new SATA cables from the motherboard.

Looking thru some other posts I think my next move may be to confirm that my DVD is properly identified in the BIOS, I thought it was but I need to confirm it. I have some other cables I can try. One was not supplied with the new DVD RW. It belongs to my daughter so it may be a few days before I can get to the computer to make changes.

Have you installed the SATA drivers or are you running all drives in IDE compatiblitiy mode?

I believe I made that selection in the BIOS, but that's a good idea to check again
