A music CD is a CD-ROM.

Did the drive ever work properly? If so, what has changed? Software? Hardware?

There is a difference between Audi CDs and Data CDs in that audio CDs spin at a much slower rate, varying from 200-500 rpm. This has been a constant ever since Music CD first hit the streets.

However the spin speed of data CDs has been constantly rising and can spin at a much faster rate, anything up to 10,000 RPM depending on the specifications of the drive. A x32 drive will spin at 4800 rpm. a x52 at 10400 rpm.

The fact that it can read the slower Audio Cds and not the faster Data Cds suggests to me the the drive is getting worn. The faster the disk spins, the less room for error.
