DVD Hardware not recognized

Sony Rdr-gx257 dvd recorder

Specs: Windows XP
All of a sudden my PC doesn't recognize my DVD drive. I thought it was a bad drive so I purchased an external DVD/CD drive. That too is unrecognized. Analysis shows that drivers have been installed but that hardware is not recognized. I've checked all connections. Internal DVD uses a ribbon which I checked. External DVD used USB ports.

Have you tried a system restore to a point before the problem occurred?
Did you recently instal any new software that might have been the source of the problem?

The two events should not be related. If the drives wouldn't work after being seen then that would probably be related.

Watch the POST screens at start up to see if the BIOS is configuring the internal drives.

If you don't see any POST screens then boot into the BIOS (setup) screens and disable fast boot and any logos. If there are no options for that try hitting Esc at start up to bring up options.

The external drive should show in Device manager. possibly under USB devices.

Had a similar problem Strangely, it was AVG Antivirus. Why? I don't know, but as soon I disabled the AVG, the drive came back.

A long shot, but worth a try.
