dvd drive program file association

Specs: Windows Vista
cd/dvdrw drive doesnt seem to be reading disks.If i start the machine with a disk in it it will say what disk is inserted but when i try and play it says the file has no program associated.If i insert a disk while its running it doesnt show anything.

It used to work fine then one day nothing.I've read posts of people having this problem running certain programs but no mention of it happening to disk drives.Could it be my disk drive is just pooched?Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

When u insert the disc can u see the files?To confirm the drive is dead try to put bootable and boot u may need to change a boot order to 1.Fdd 2.Cd rom 3.Hdd

no i cant see any files on the disk ,i'm ashamed to say i have no idea how to go about changing the boot order.Thanks for the responses though.

ok,did some googling and figured out the boot order thing.That is the order it's in.I also tried some of the drive association fixes but no luck.

olpurp, If you have one of those CD/DVD disk cleaners that clean the laser give that a try.

Yeah try to clean and try to boot if failed to boot the drive is dead.

Tried cleaning but no luck.I am unfortunately too much of a noob to know what you mean by bootable.Do you think it would still tell me what disk is inserted if it's dead?

also i just tried a friend's external disk drive and same thing happens :(
