DVD drive not reading disks

Specs: Windows XP Pro
I have a toshiba dvd-rom drive in my ibm t20 laptop but it will only read DVDrom and no other meadia whether DVD films, music CDs or CDrom. It comes up with a message saying that the disk may be corrupted or in a format not recognised by windows. Any help would be appreciated.

First clean the drive with a Lens Cleaner CD, secondly if not work replace the drive...

I had already cleaned the drive prior to doing a reinstallation of Windows XP from a bootable DVD hence the reason I know that the DVDroms work.

If the drive is recognizing there is a disk inside then it may be a matter of having the correct codecs installed. To play movies you need a program like Power DVD. Windows media player should play the music CDs.
