DVD drive not reading discs

Hi, my laptop is experiencing some problems with the DVD drive. When I insert a disc into the slot drive, it makes "whirring" sounds like it is reading the disc, but for some reason, the disc is not recognized. This has happened a number of times with different discs so I suspect it is an issue with my drive.
I have already deleted the drive through Device Manager and rebooted my computer but to no avail - my DVDs are not being read!
I've had this laptop for approx a year and a half so the warranty's up and I can't send it in. I've only occasionally used the DVD drive though so I don't think it's a matter of overuse.
Please, please, please help! Thank you!

Try using a lense cleaning kit on the drive. That MAY solve the problem. If the drive is located in a removable bay you may be able to get to the lense with a Q-tip dampened with rubbing alcohol after ejecting it.

Hi, my DVD drive is similar to a Mac drive in that it's a slot - how would a lens cleaning kit work to clean it out? Thanks.

Lense cleaning kit is a special disk that you put solvent on and then insert into the drive and run it.
