dvd burner not recognized in xp

Specs: Windows XP, 0.99 GB of RAM
External DVD RW is not recognized in XP. Explorer can see it for a second, then it goes away again, comes back etc. When a disc is put in, be it full or empty, be it CD-R, DVD-R or DVD-RW, Explorer has the same reaction. It's like a light house: you see me, you see me not.
I went to computer shop and tried another external DVD writer: same thing.
Please help. Thanks a lot in advance.

You may be using another port on the same controller to connect another high current device. That may be exceeding the total power limits of the USB controller. Try moving the external to a different USB port or use a powered USB hub.

Thanks a lot Othehill, I will try to get hold of a powered USB hub, although I would think that shop I went in, would have tried to sell me one...

Presume this is a laptop you are dealing with since you took it into a PC shop.
What did they suggest when their external drive would not function in your USB port?
Might they not have told you your USB port is faulty? or the USB controller on your motherboard is shot? Tell the full story. I would find it unlikely the PC store staff would simply have said "Sorry it doesn't work. Thanks for shopping here. Would you like fries & a Coke with that"
