Dual monitors (laptop/TV) suddenly not cloning image

Specs: Windows XP SP3
Our trusty old Dell XP mini is still extremely trusty, but suddenly now won't show its screen when the HDMI cable is plugged in. It's been in the same setup for a long while -- mostly used to watch movies on the LCD TV at the other end of that cable -- but we could always see the desktop 'cloned' on both the TV and the PC. Now it's only on the TV and the laptop is dark... until we unplug the cable.

It's only a mild annoyance but we'll be grateful for clues how to reverse it. Just before this happened, the screen resolution went wonky, when the AC power cord was accidentally unplugged -- but after fixing that, the no-screen issue remains.

Control Panel> Display> Settings shows 2 minotor icons but declares one (the non-plug&play) "Not Active" (regardless of whether the HDMI cable is in or out). We suspect this is where to start fixing but are clueless what steps to take. Any help?

There is a key combination to cycle thru what screens are active, it is Fn + ?
whatever the manual states.

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

Yeah, we tried that early on (Fn+F8) but no joy - it was evidently something much nastier. But a system restore to the day before whatever happened happened and all is peacy. (I'd forgotten all about SRs, bless them.) Thanks.
