Specs: Windows XP
I was burning some music CD's today and the drive froze up. I inserted a pin in the little hole to get the last burned CD out but the drive won't open or close by itself. When I try to burn a new CD (doing this through Itunes) it gives me a message saying the drive is being used by another application. I'm wondering if I fried it by burning too many CD's?? Any ideas

Have you rebooted the computer? If nothing else that may give you an indication of what else is tying up the drive.

Does it open in safe mode? Or, when you start up the computer, hit the PAUSE key before XP starts loading. That will pause the posting process and since nothing else will be using the cdrom you can see if the tray opens then.

After I rebooted it seems to open fine now. Thank you! Can those drives overheat? I don't burn things too often but don't want to fry the drive either???

Yes, they can overheat. If you know how, burn at slower speeds and wait between burns.

Burner drives are considered disposable hardware. You can buy new for $30 shipped these days.

Good to know. I think I saw an option in the burn box that said something like "what speed to burn" and it automatically is checked 'maximum speed possible". Is that what you mean?

Yes, IMO it is always better to burn a little slower than max. Less chance of a defective burn too.

Your problem with the drive not opening was probably not related to this issue though.

I don't know anything about how iTunes works so I can't comment on it.
