Drive Letters Messed Up

Compaq / Evo d500

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 1.794 GHz / 767 MB
Hello. I have purchased an old Compaq EVO d500 to play around with while I'm learning. I just formatted and installed Windows XP Pro on the old hard drive. It installed just fine, but the My Computer shows the hard drive letter as E and the DVD drive as C. Is there a way to change that without reinstalling?
Thank you in advance for any help.

As drive E is the System and Boot drive it cannot be changed with reinstalling the Operating system.

Windows XP does this sometimes and the circumstances in which it allocates unexpected drive letters is in the Lap of the Gods. However, there is no reason why it has to be changed. Everything will work just as well regardless of which drive letter the system and boot files reside on.

Optical drives should not be assigned the letter C. Do you have the WinXP installation CD in the DVD drive?

Could be that both drives are jumpered using CS (Cable Select) If this is the case then I suggest you change the jumpers to make the hard drive the Master and the DVD drive the Slave. Reboot and see what happens.

If that doesn't straighten things out, check Disk Management to see if there are multiple partitions on the hard drive and if the drive is seen as a basic disk.

If there is only one partition then try changing the drive letter assignment for the DVD drive to a higher available letter.

Thank you to everybody for your help! I checked the jumpers, I went into Disk Management and it wouldn't let me change anything but the DVD drive. As Stuart said I will need to re-install in order to have the drive letters changed. With the current assignment everything seems to be working fine, so I'll wait about re-installation. I do appreciate all your help! Consider this fixed! =)
