Does the mobo matter?

June 16, 2009 at 23:39:25
Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 1.989 GHz / 1833 MB
I plan on building a computer and I was wondering what are negative effects of buying a cheap mobo, lets say less than $100. This is what I plan on equipping it with:

GFX: GeForce 8000 or Radeon 2000 series with 512 MB RAM
CPU: Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2.

Reason is, I plan on playing Starcraft 2 this fall if they finally release it, and those are the recommended Specs for it. On those specs I'd also like to know which one you think is better between ATI and Nvidia, AMD vs Intel.

Thanks for your help!

"what are negative effects of buying a cheap mobo, lets say less than $100"

There are plenty of decent boards for well under $ just need to know what to look for. If you wanna build a cheap system, go with AMD. Here's one possible list:

Athlon 64 X2 7750 Kuma 2.7GHz - $65

ASRock AM2+/AM3 AMD 780G Motherboard - $72

CORSAIR XMS 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2-1066 - $40

MSI Radeon HD 4670 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 video card - $58

Here's a couple of power supply possibilities:

BFG Tech 450W ATX12V V2.2 Power Supply - $45

CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W Power Supply - $46

Total is less than $300.

Wow Jam thanks a lot! You basically just built me a computer. I was on Dell's website last night after I posted this getting ready to settle and buy a Customized Inspiron Desktop for $500, but once again I have changed my mind. Thank you very much.
