Do I HAVE to have the same exact hard drives for RAID 5?

Specs: Windows Server 2008, XEON Quad Core 2.5
Recently, I have been buying 1 TB hard drives to build a RAID 5 Array on my servers. I only want to build one on my Dell server using four 1 TB hard drives which are Western Digital WD1002FBYS drives. They will be going onto a Perc 5i RAID controller. Now, I am finding out that TWO of my hard drives are HP GB1000EAMYC Drives and are a totally different brand from the WD1002FBYS. I really don't want to buy 2 more WD1002FBYS because that would be a waste of money for me.

So, can I mix 2 WD1002FBYS and GB1000EAMYC or does it HAVE to be the same exact model? All hard drives that I have are the same exact specs, that is 1 TB and 32 MB Cache.

My screename used to be superjnf, but eversince I could connect my facebook, I am going to start using this.

For a RAID setup, your set of hard drives do not even have to be the same brand, let alone the the same model.

Sometimes the same hard drive sizes vary in the actual amount of space available, but the raid will use the maximum common size of the drives. If you had 200g seagate, a 500g western digital and a 1tb western digital, the maximum raid size would only use 200g of each hard drive and waste a lot of space. In your case they will be roughly the same size and shouldn't have any problems.

Where different manufacturers is sometimes a problem is when cloning hard drives, the actual amount of bytes available can be different from one(on the same size hd) maker to another and cause you to have insufficient space to clone.

I am doing a Hardware RAID on a Perc 5i RAID Controller Card. Newegg has cheated me months ago by advertising their hard drive as WD1002FBYS and instead, gave me GB1000EAMYC drives instead, therefore I have 2 WD1002FBYS and another 2 GB1000EAMYC which I can't return. Can I use these 4 drives on my Dell Perc 5i and configure them as RAID 5?
