Solved disturbance on all audio programs (laptop)

May 25, 2012 at 19:22:34
Specs: Windows XP
I listen to music on Itunes, suddenly there is a disturbance, a scratchy noise and some songs even sound like they have hicups. I didn't install any new software, only microsoft and windows updates, and it is on all audio programs, YouTube, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, even the alert sounds it make. It helps when I restore the system back a few days, but it lasts only a while and starts again. Please help!

If the problem is solved with a restore then it seems logical that one of the installed updates is affecting the sound.

Look at the last batch of installed updates and see if any of them are for hardware. Also see if there was a WMPlayer update. If you suspect an update you can uninstall it and if that doesn't solve the problem you can re-install that update.

Make a note of the KB number before uninstalling. You may need to tick the box to show updates in Control Panel? add/remove programs.

I checked all the updates and the only suspicious one was a Microsoft Silverlight update which I couldn't remove so I uninstalled Silverlight, no change. Then I removed all the updates one by one although it was only .net framework and security updates, no change. I'm buffled. Can there be a driver problem?

Try updating, or rolling back, the sound drivers.

Not sure how to do that, but I did another restore and didn't download any updates that wasn't security updates and touch wood, it is still going without any problems. Thank you for the advise.

Was the restore point you used the last one available? If not, I suggest you clear any newer points than the one you used.
