Distorted sound when power cord plugged in

Dell Studio 1558
October 30, 2011 at 07:44:43
Specs: Windows 7
When I plug in the power cord to my Dell 1558 i7, the sound is first distorted (it sounds like space ships are flying in my living room) and then the sound is basically gone and I cannot hear movies, music, etc. It's as if I have turned the sounds way down. It's VERY muted.

When I unplug the power, the sound is fine.

I exchanged batteries, and had the same result.

Is it a problem with the sound card, the power adaptor, or something else?

Thanks for your ideas!

I'd be thinking that the motherboard is at fault. It could be the power adapter (supply) in most cases but I get the feeling from the symptoms it's the onboard power supply.

It would have never been the battery I'd have thought.

Might see if you can just go to a store and try a power supply that is for that dell or an exact replacement product. I use wrong stuff based on voltage/current tests but I have tools to test that. Don't you try guessing.

Thanks, Jefro. If you think it's the motherboard, I'll just contact Dell Support. They'll come to my home and check it out. Eeeek! Motherboard!!!
