Display shuts off but Laptop is still running

December 12, 2013 at 02:24:14
Specs: Windows 7
I am using compaq presario cq45-207TU almost 4 year old laptop. It has dualbootwindows 7 and ubuntu 13.04 OS. Now I am facing this problem, laptop display suddenly shuts off after using it for 5 minutes. I can hear the sound, but not display.(sometimes my laptop reaches the temperature around 70 C , laptop overheats a lot )

I can see something from the display when I make display horizontal to ground. Problem repeats even after restarting the laptop.

If anyone reading this can guide me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Could be the backlight/invertor cutting out (depends if it's pre LED backlit). Could be the graphics chip.

If you can see a dark, faint display on the screen, then it seems it may be the backlight.

Does it maybe flash back on if you tap lightly at the back of the keyboard, near the bottom of the screen, or on the plastic bezel at the bottom of the screen (DON'T TAP THE SCREEN ITSELF)?
How 'bout toggling the Fn and designated screen on/off key (F8 ?)

As a process of elimination, via the VGA (HDMI if fitted) sockets, try plugging the laptop into an external monitor or TV. If the display shows up, then the graphics chip is ok.

If it's a backlight prob, then it could the light itself, the invertor (if pre-LED backlit), or hopefully just a plug worked loose.

See how the elimination process goes...

You need to be pretty careful/confident to strip it down to check. Otherwise could be a job for your local PC guy.

Service manual for the CQ45, here, may give an indication in there of dismantling procedures.

If I were you, to start I would get a can of compressed air (if you don't already have it) and blow out your computer (do this when it's powered off and all power sources are removed). Something having a lot of dust inside your laptop can inhibit it's ability to work.

I don't know the reason for the shut down of display. But for one log in I can see my display and for the next time I can't, whether its due to the blocking of fan due to dust particles? or due to the some hardware malfunction?
