My guess is that the hard drive has been removed. Open it up and see if there is a hard drive present.

Purchase a hard drive and an operating system. Good luck.

Oh no, there is definitely a hard drive and somehow during my explorations and poking around I have found it is write protected. Is there any way I can unwrite protect it?

If it were write protected you could view the files. You just couldn't modify them. Do you mean encrypt the drive?

Are you sure you know a hard drive when you see it? Could what you are looking at be a floppy drive?

No matter how the drive was configured, the BIOS should still report its presence. I would say that either there is not hard drive, the drive is defective or disconnected.
