Hi Guys. I have a desktop PC (HP xw4300) running Windows XP Pro that has just started to exhibit a power up problem. On powering up the PC the screen remains dark, no beeps from the speakers and the HD light glows continuously. The PC in searching for the boot device does access the DVD drive momentarily and then hangs.

The screen is not woken from its power off state in this process.

After 2 or 3 power up attempts the PC boots up successfully without any glitches evident.

The hard drives are relatively new (about 2 years old) and the memory cards were replaced about 6 months ago.

The power up problem has presented itself in the past week.

Appreciate any assistance/advice offered.

Disconnect the power. Open the case. Disconnect power & data cables from the hard drives and optic drives. Now re-connect the mains power and try to boot up into BIOS Setup. Does it immediately boot up and show the bootsequence on screen? Do you usually get a Bootup beep from the system when it is working properly?

Thanks for the prompt advice. I'll try it next time the PC gives me grief.
