desktop not right

July 27, 2010 at 07:24:37
Specs: Windows XP, 3.00GHz/106GB (76GB free space)
Upon bootup today, my desktop has shifted to the left. It is partially under the monitor on the left hand side so to speak. Apologies if this is not clear. Example: I cannot click 'Start' I have to access this via the 'Windows' key on my keyboard. In 'Start' the menu comes up but is not all visible on my screen. Fortunately I can get into accessories etc.

To the right of my screen is a black space running from the top of the screen to the bottom and measuring 4.5 centimetres wide.
Example: if I open any window such as internet browser a) maximized it stops up against this black strip on the right and on the left side is off the screen the same as the desktop image. b) When minimized I can slide the window all the way under the black strip or all the way off the left hand side of the monitor.

I have attempted 2 system restores, tried all different resolutions and this has not resolved the problem.

All responses gratefully appreciated.

I did type details in the box but it is not showing: Packard Bell iSTART 1370 desktop. Sorry if I have made a mistake, don't know what happened there.

System has deteriorated much since OP. Is on it's way to melt down I reckon, similar to how last PC ended up. So I am off to do a system recovery, drastic I know but can't use the machine for anything. Problems running up to this have included: 1) low virtual memory alert 2) me resetting swap file then back again 3) fan becoming very loud especially on start up and video playback 4) installed 500GB portable external hard drive (Western Digital) this week from when it has deteriorated very rapidly browser froze several times just on this post! Will log back into this excellent site when I get this PC sorted or a new one which could take a few months tbh but I will still read anything posted for future ref as I am getting tired of these machines only lasting 3-4 years especially when I have only used 30GB of RAM.
