Dell Latitude d630 - display going nuts

Dell Latitude atg d630 laptop computer (...

Specs: Windows XP
I've got an old Dell Latitude d630 - it's worked great for years. Now the display is going crazy - to describe it: I'm seeing the screen split in 2, with the top section on the bottom, and the bottom section on the top. The machine still boots and operates fine.

Here's what I've done so far: Downloaded and reinstalled the latest display drivers. This worked for a bit - the display was normal - but it has slowly started to not work any more. Meaning, before, I would boot up in safe mode, install the drivers, reboot and everything was fine for a few weeks. Then, when it would go screwy again, I'd do the same thing.

But this "process" (hahahaha) has stopped working - the machine will not boot up without the display being screwed up. I'm trying to figure out what my options are - I want to just get my data off the machine and trash it - but as it stands right now that isn't possible.

I've considered booting to an external display but my guess is that won't work either.

Anybody have any ideas? Any help greatly appreciated!

"...I'm seeing the screen split in 2, with the top section on the bottom, and the bottom section on the top..."

... must admit I've never seen flip halves before!

"...I've considered booting to an external display but my guess is that won't work either..."

... its worth a try borrow one and hook it up!

... check the block connector(s) actually in the screen I physically bent one forward/backward slightly (push 'em home) and it sprang the other half back to life!

... some info here service manual download when you click small blue >> here after scrolling down bottom (left)

(manual consists of jpg's and htm's extract then click display.htm)
