Specs: vista, 3 gig
I have a dell laptop with one harddrive. the issue recently started a few weeks ago. Some times I would start up the laptop and it would say that there isnt a harddrive. rebooting will not fixit. then suddenly it starts to see the harddrive again. Is this a harddrive problem or a laptop problem? any way to fix it.

Tell us the specific model of your Dell laptop.

If that's not obvious.....

For Dell computers, they have a Service Tag number - the specific model can be determined by using that on their site, or can often be determined there automatically by you downloading some software, if Windows is still working, on the subject computer. The Service Tag number should be on a label on the outside of the case, probably on the bottom on a laptop, on the back on a desktop, and is often also shown in the bios Setup.

Some bioses have a setting where you can set a time delay regarding recognizing the hard drive(s) while booting. If your bios has that, try setting it to a longer delay than it's presently set to, Save bios settings.

If that doesn't help....

If the laptop has normal video while booting before the hard drive is supposed to load the operating system, there's probably nothing wrong with the laptop itself.

Test your hard drive.

See response 1 in this:

If you get errors when you run the diagnostics long test, see response 4 in that.

I do have normal video when booting its just some times the bios doesn't see the harddrive. I used hdd Regenerator 1.71 and there were no bad sectors. ( this was at a time when it was reading the harddrive.) I will try the seatool disk.
