Dell laptop Inspiron 1000 will not power on

April 15, 2011 at 16:20:21
Specs: Windows XP
My Dell Inpirion 1000 Laptop was working great one day and will not power on the next day.

I have never had any problems.

The battery and power cord are good.

The laptop would not turn on. Green lights flash for a second...then completely off, but nothing happens.

The fan does not even start.

I am NOT able to boot into Windows to see the Dell screen when it is trying to boot.

I do hear the hard drive start and stop. but nothing happens.

So which one of these could be problem? motherboard, memory, or processor?

How do I troubleshoot to find out which one is the problem without spending whole a lot of money?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!

Doesn't sound like a CPU overheating issue if the laptop powers up for a second and then shuts back down right away. Is it possible that a screw or something metal got dislodged and is now shorting out the system?
