Specs: Windows XP
I tried uninstalling the device and let the system detect it again when the PC was started up again but that did not help. The device does not detect anything placed in the tray.

Drives do fail sometimes. Did you do anything that may have caused the failure? Were you working inside the case for any reason?

I'm not aware of anything I've done to cause this failure and no, I have not been inside the case....yet. I just went to the geek squad guys (Best Buy) and described the sound the drive was making and he assured me that the drive was failing mechanically so I bought a new one. I've got 30 days to return it if there is some way of salvaging the old one and determining that there are still many years of use left in it. Thanks for the quick reply.

DVD burners generally cost less than $20. They are considered "throw away" items & are not worth repairing.
