Specs: Windows Vista, 1.5GB
Recently, a Dell 435MT XPS Desktop owned by my family was rebooted (1/3/11). On the restart, the BIOS no longer recognizes the Hard drive at all. The DVD-RW drive is listed onscreen, but the 500GB hard drive remains undetected.

Do I need to replace the hard drive or does this indicate a different problem?

If the pc wasn't moved or disturbed then the hdd is bad but first take a look inside. Make sure connections aren't loose(sata data & power cable), make sure sata data cable is straight, swap both data and power cable, make sure sata is enabled in your bios, use different sata ports. If it doesn't work it's a paperweight(nothing u can do). Next time enable S.M.A.R.T
