Which program on your computer are these saved emails made by, or are they just copies of the contents of email ?

If there is more than one user on your computer, by default you can't delete a lot of files in another user's profile. Either that user has to delete them, or you should get permission from them to delete them, in which case, you would need to "Take Ownership" of the files you can't delete of theirs in your profile.

If you have emails that were on a previous Windows installation, you may get "access denied" messages when you try to delete those and other files. In that case you need to "Take Ownership" of the files or folders you can't delete.

I know what you need to do to "Take Ownership" of the files or folders you can't delete in XP and 2000, but not in Vista and Windows 7.

"First what email program are you using?"

It sounds like whatever it is, is installed in Windows and is not web mail.

E.g.
Outlook Express is built into Windows.
Outlook is standalone bought program, or part of a bought Microsoft Office Suite.
Open Office is open source freeware similar to Microsoft Office and may have an email program built into it.

If you don't know, what program opens the email?

Is there more than one user on your computer ?

If yes, does that person or at least one person of those people save email on the computer too?
If yes, or in any case, do you get "access denied" or similar messages when you try to delete certain email ?

What program is this index in?

Most email programs that are installed on a computer have a feature where they save deleted email in a Trash or Deleted folder, or similar, rather than deleting it right away, because sometimes people make mistakes and delete the wrong email . With those programs, by default, you have to delete the email again in the Trash or Deleted folder or similar as well.
Or - look in the Help for the email program - there is often a key or key combo you can press to delete the email the first time without it being transfered to a Trash or Deleted folder or similar, or a setting you can change so deleted email never goes there.

I don't use AOL's email program , but in any email program I've ever used, you can select multiple emails to delete at the same time in the list of the IN or OUT or TRASH mailboxes. At the very least you should be able to hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard when you want to select multiple emails to delete at the same time, the same as you can do when you want to select multiple files to delete (without deleting them all) in My Computer, RIGHT click with the cursor on the highlighted selections, and choose Delete. Look at the Help in the email program if it's installed on the computer.

Note that most email programs that are installed on your computer do not actually delete the email, by default - they send it to a Trash mailbox or similar, so that you can easily restore email to the original mailbox if you deleted it by mistake. If you are sure you don't want it, delete it from the Trash or similar mailbox too, or change the default setting in the email program so deleting it the first time actually deletes it, or see the Help in the program - you can often actually delete it the first time by pressing a key at the same time you delete it.
