Dead laptop battery Cause of random shutdown?

Specs: Windows XP Sp3, Mobile Intel Pentium 740@ 1.733 GHz
I'm facing random self-shutdowns when using my old laptop. It has completely dead battery, that can't charge at all - the laptop is all the time connected to AC line. Can the dead battery be the cause of the random self-shutdowns even though the laptop is constantly connected to AC line? Thanks.

If the battery is bad then take it out and leave it out first of all.

Then you can move on to other issues like heat maybe or look at event logs or dump logs. Can boot maybe to bios to see if any health monitoring or numbers to view.
Run memtest for a few days.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
