Dead HDD?

Gateway / Mx3231

Specs: XP, Celeron/512
Got a friend's laptop that was so loaded with viruses/spyware that I couldn't see the desktop. Couldn't boot into Safe Mode and couldn't boot from any of the devices that were in the list of boot devices in the BIOS of the laptop. I took it out and hooked it to an adapter cable and then hooked it to all of my machines (2 Win7 and 1 Vista). None of the pc's would pick up the drive. In Disk Management, I couldn't initialize the drive - got the 'device not ready' and then 'Incorrect Function' messages. I tried both Hiren and Ultimate Boot CD disk and data recovery utilities and neither could see or find the drive. I put the drive back in the laptop and then tried booting again and on the initial screen it says Exiting Intel PXE Rom and below that was Operating System Not Found. At this point I came here for sage advice. All opinions and replies are greatly respected and appreciated.

The 'Intel PXE Rom' message was the laptop attempt to boot from the network port. That's usually the last boot device that's tried. So it appears the laptop is now not seeing the drive either.

Well, go into cmos/bios setup and see if the dirve shows there and make sure the hard drive is enabled as a boot device.

But my guess is the drive is dead.

Bah, humbug

Thanks for the reply. I get the same message as before when I tried that.

HDD diagnostic tools can be found below. Use one that boots from floppy or CD if no floppy available.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Thanks for the reply. I tried booting from a cd earlier and it will not boot from anything. I hear the cd drive power up when I boot the computer but it will not boot. I get the same message..Intel.... Another strange thing is that my friend says that she bought the laptop in 2005 at Bestbuy but it states 1999 as the year of the BIOS. Probably a moot issue at this point. I have already spent too much time with this and she says that she is going to go get another laptop tonight anyway but I had to come here for advice from the gurus. At this point there is death, taxes!
