ddr400 512 mb ram displaying only 256mb ram

Specs: Windows XP
i had a 512 mb ddr400 ram which after formatting my computer shows only 256mb. before formatting my computer it showed 512. this the second time i formatted the computer. the first time i formatted it had no problem. please suggest a solution.....

First off, it has nothing to do with the format. Just coincidence. Does the total RAM show up on the POST screen (the black screen w/ white text before windows loads)?

If BIOS post shows 512mb and XP shows 256mb, and you have on-board graphics, the graphics chip will be using the memory ?

Because that is what level 1 tech support at the OEMs probably suggest.

Reformatting seems to be a universal cure for every conflict. Most of the time more problems seem to be created by doing that. Like OTH says, that's all level 1 tech support seems to know. How many times have they suggested a new Mobo for a bad ram chip etc.
