Solved Custom-built computer troubleshooting issues

Specs: Windows XP, Intel Pentium Dual-core E2160/1GB DDR2 RAM
Next month, I'm going to be ordering the parts to build my computer and I'm worried that I might not be able to determine which part's not working (if I'm unlucky and receive a defective product). So If I build a computer and nothing turns on, how am I supposed to know which component is not working? The only issue I think I might run into trouble with is figuring out if the motherboard or the power supply is not working, so is there any way to figure this out?
