CPU Upgrade

Specs: Windows 7, 4GB

I have an ASUS P5L-VM 1394 Mobo with a 430W PSU, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, Nividia 7600 GS graphics card and an Intell ATX E6400 Core 2 Duo 2.13 Ghz CPU, 2 x WD Green
500G HDD and 1 CD/DVD.

I decided to upgarde it to 4 GB DDR2 and I also bought a Intell CPU Core 2 Duo E7500. When I start the computor it tells me:

INtell CPU u code loading error
CPU over volatage error
overclocking failed or overvoltage failed.

I then go into my BIOS and found that the VCORE voltage is in red at 1.080V while the rest of the figures are in blue. 3.3V is at 3.312V, 5V is at 5.145V and 12V is at 12.249V.

First of all is the VCORE voltage too high or too low? I have been to a voltage website which tells me my PSU is adequate for my setup.

I checked the motherboard requirements before purchase and have found the new CPU and mobo are compatible.

The only thing I haven't done is updated the BIOS. I have the ASUS BIOS updating software installed and each time I try to use it nothing happens...for hours, the modem just slowly blinks away.

So if the BIOS does need updating which is the best way to do it?

I have not made any adjustments in the BIOS to overclock my previous chip, I am slowly learning my way through all this and am becoming quite frustrated and am ready to chuck the whole thing out the bloody window!!!.

Overall wattage ratings for PSUs are misleading. The PSU can have lots of power on the 3.3V & 5V rails and not have enough on the most used 12V rail.

So, your PSU may not be up to the task. That said, you should flash the BIOS while using the compatible CPU. Then upgrade to the faster one.

I don't run Intel stuff so I can't speak to the required voltages but the specs on the new CPU should indicate the required voltage. Perhaps because the board doesn't recognize the CPU it is supplying the wrong Vcore voltage.

Reset the BIOS using the ClearCMOS jumper (unplug power cord 1st), then bootup, immediately enter the BIOS & reconfigure the CPU settings.

Set AI overclocking to MANUAL & configure the CPU settings yourself & set the DRAM frequency to DDR2-533 to match the CPU. Do it regardless of which RAM (DDR2-533, DDR2-667, DDR2-800) you're running.

Hopefully you got the E7500 really cheap? If you paid over $100 for a meager 800MHz in clock speed, you're certainly not getting your money's worth. You probably could have overclocked the E6400 to close to that speed & it actually would have performed better due to the faster FSB.

The e7500 is a 2nd gen Core 2 processor--a 45nm Wolfdale.

Your motherboard only supports 65nm Core 2 processors based on the Conroe and Allendale cores.

Remove it to avoid burning it out !

Hey Guys,

I've just re-installed the old CPU and it's overheating. The new CPU with it's heatsink would be fine at abouut 38 degrees but the old one just climbs and climbs until I turn it off.

Would it be something as simple as needed thermal paste or tape? What's the difference??????
